For extraordinary achievement, while serving as Deputy Leader of a Combat Wing on a bombing mission to Brunswick, Germany on February 20 1944, Major James M. Stewart was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on May 3, 1944. Major Stewart assumed command of the wing while over the target and in spite of enemy opposition and heavy flak, he led his wing of Liberators through an excellent bomb run and the wing scored hits on the target. Lieutenant Colonel Ramsey D. Potts, Commanding Officer of the Liberator group, is shown pinning the Distinguished Flying Cross on Major Stewart.
